Improving workforce cultural competency using Let’s get real

The ability to measure and understand mental health and addiction workforce cultural competency has increasingly become a critical need identified by KPI Programme participants.

Cultural competence means people have an awareness of cultural diversity, combined with the ability to work effectively and respectfully when supporting people from different cultural backgrounds to them. Cultural competency is also an enabler for addressing inequities in our health system.

Workforce values, attitudes and skills are cornerstones for cultural competency; however, services often note a lack of access to tools for measuring and supporting professional development in this space.

In this benchmarking breakout, participants heard from Māori leaders about the importance of cultural competency and cultural diversity for Māori and discovered the Let’s get real tools available for measuring and supporting the growth of workforce cultural competence specific to working with Māori and working with whānau.
